5 Ways to Start Yoga

Do you want to start yoga but are unsure where or how to begin?

Maybe you ready to get back to in-person sessions after lockdowns?

Here are 5 ways you can get back to the practise:

1) Find A Studio:

Great if you:

  • Are looking for cost effective option.

  • Enjoy human interaction and the opportunity to connect with new people who enjoy similar hobbies.

  • Like a new environment and enjoy the trip out and maybe a coffee after with friends.

Not great if you:

  • Are a beginner (unless you know the teacher or class style very well).

  • Want a more personal approach.

  • Are experiencing or recovering from injury and need specific modifications.

  • Have a restricted schedule and limited available times.

2) Book a 1:1 private session in person or online:

Great if you:

  • Are looking for tailor made, personalised sequences.

  • If you are starting your journey, would like to refine or deepen your practise.

  • If you like the space to ask any questions and ensure that your needs met in each session.

  • If you are living on a tighter schedule as the time and location (your location, online or outside) is decided between you and your teacher.

Not great if you:

  • Have limited disposable income (however teachers can be open to discussing your options).

  • Prefer the company of practising with others.

3) Gather friends or colleagues for a private group or corporate session:

Great if you:

  • Are looking for cost-effective tailor made, personalised sessions.

  • Enjoy the energy of a group but feel happier/ safer surrounded by friends rather than studio classes to ask questions.

  • Have limited available time as the location and time are chosen by you and you can combine social, exercise and wellbeing in one event.

Not great if you:

  • Prefer practising in a studio.

  • Have completely different aims/ interests/ goals within your group.

  • Would like 1:1 focus and dedication towards your goals.

4) Online:

Great if you:

  • Are available at different times as you can find 20-60 minute classes on YouTube to do anytime.

  • Enjoy being in the comfort of your own home.

  • Want to dip your toes in first with out a big financial commitment.

There are SO many great videos I’d be happy to recommend.

Not great if you:

  • Already have enough screen time.

  • If you need accountability to get it done.

  • If you’d like specific guidance in starting or deepening your practise.

  • Would like bespoke sequences/ classes to suit your needs.

5) Develop a self practise:

Great if you:

  • Have experience already and a good foundation of the poses so your body can move freely without overthinking.

  • Feel like group or online classes aren’t hitting the spot and your body is craving different movements.

  • Want to practise at a precise time each day.

Not great if you:

  • You are just beginning and want to be lead.

  • Find it hard to get out of your head on your own.

  • Want to explore new poses, ask questions about your practise or enjoy being guided.
